Claims for the effectiveness of treatment for drug and alcohol problems differ dramatically. A recent overview of alcoholism-treatment outcome studies documented widely differing claims, ranging from a better than 90% recovery rate reported by a free-standing hospital facility to a 7% abstinence rate reported by the Rand Corporation for U.S. federally funded facilities.(1) What accounts for such divergent findings on treatment effectiveness? Can the content of different programs vary so radically that some produce a 90% abstinence rate while others generate only a 7% abstinence rate?
